Like the rest of the Sierra Blanca Massif, Little Bear is composed of pre-Cambrain granite estimated to be approximately 1.8 billion years old. Along with nearby Blanca Peak and Ellingwood Point Little Bear rises nearly 7,000 feet above the San Luis Valley to the west and south. The peak sits atop a long ridge separating two glacier-carved valleys.

While summit and most of the southern flank of Mount Lindsey are privately held, access to the summit is still allowed allowed at no charge. The surrounding terrain boasts some of Colorado's most dramatic scenery. The Huerfano Valley is worth a visit even if climbing is not in your plans. Anybody who has ever been to this trailhead knows this is one of Colorado's finest spots for photography.

Some feel that listing Ellingwood Point as a true 14er is somewhat controversial since it barely meets the "300 ft Rule" and is also quite close to its good buddy Blanca Peak. Since it was named after an early pioneer of mountain climbing in the Western United States and in Colorado in particular, we'll go ahead and celebrate the accomplishments of Albert Russel Ellingwood with a Peak Patch!
