Mount of the Holy Cross was named for the distinctive cross-shaped snowfield on the northeast face. This distinct feature has made it the subject of many painters, photographers and even a poem by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow ("The Cross of Snow). From 1929 - 1950 it held National Monument" status but has since returned to the status of just "an awesome climb". If you head up this iconic peak be sure to "Celebrate Your Summit!"
