The Wheeler Survey team who made first recorded ascent of of Blanca Peak in 1874 were a little disappointed when the summit revealed a stone shelter structure which historians have possibly linked to the Ute Indians or wandering Spaniards. While you will most likely be sharing the top with some guest as well there is no reason not to share you memories with others by "Celebrating Your Summit" with a Blanca Peak summit patch from Peak Patch.

While not as high as its big brother Crestone Peak, and connected to it by a high, jagged ridge, Crestone Needle is regarded as a worthy climb in its own right. It is particularly popular because of its inclusion in the well-known book "Fifty Classic Climbs of North America" by Steve Roper and Allen Steck. Almost all fatalities on this peak occur on either the Class 4 traverse from Crestone Peak or the technical Ellingwood Ledges Route. So when you are back at the car safe and sound after this one, be sure to, "Celebrate the Summit"!

Culebra Peak is one of the only 14ers on private land. Access is limited, and a fee (currently $150 per person) is charged to climb the peak. Ownership of and access to the land, both for recreational and other activities, have been controversial issues for many years, involving multiple lawsuits and even occasional violence. If you choose to knock this one out, be sure that it is done legally.

Rising nearly 9,000 ft above the Roaring Fork Valley, the Elk Mountains are home to some amazing Colorado treasures. In addition to be home to Aspen Ski Resort the range contains the “Maroon Bells”, one of the most photographed landscapes in Colorado and featured by Peak Patch. The range provides a formidable barrier to travel and is traversed only by backroad passes and trails, which only adds the beauty of the area. Since the days of the Colorado Silver Boom, the range has been the site of mining activity. Treasure Mountain, overlooking the town of Marble, is home to the famous Yule Marble Quarry, which produced the marble used to create The Tomb of the Unknowns, the Lincoln Memorial, and the Denver Post Office and other buildings.

Handies Peak is the 41st highest peak in Colorado and is in the San Juan range. The climb up Handies is quite nice scenery and the summit is noted for its remotness from civilization. From the summit you cant see a city or a road.. not a sign of civilization. The two most popular trailheads to climb Handies are the American Basin trailhead, and the Grizzly Gulch trailhead. Grizzly Gulch is a longer climb, but it has the advantage that you can use the same trailhead to also climb Redcloud and Sunshine. Whichever one you choose, be sure to "Celebrate Your Summit"!

Huron Peak while stunning is home to a terrible story. On July 9, 1994, a Flight for Life rescue helicopter crashed at approximately 12,200 feet while attempting to rescue a female hiker who had suffered a broken ankle. The 1000' roll down the side killed both the pilot and nurse on board; the accident was the first in the history of the Flight for Life program. A terrible reminder that the activity we enjoy so much can be dangerous, life is short, and we should always "Celebrate Our Summits!"

Maroon Peak is the taller (14,163 ft) of the two summits that make up the Maroon Bells and which when viewed from the Maroon Creek valley is one of the most famous scenes in Colorado. Unlike other mountains in the Rockies that are composed of granite and limestone, the Bells are composed of metamorphic sedimentary mudstone, giving rise to dangerously loose rock along almost any route. A US Forest Service sign on the access trail refers to these mountains as "The Deadly Bells" a named earned in 1965 when eight people died in five separate accidents.

While the following has nothing to do with 14ers we found it interesting that the name "Aeolus" actually belongs to THREE characters in Greek Mythology, Son of Hellen, Son of Poseidon, Son of Hippotes. Mount Yale was first climbed by a research team from Harvard University led by Josiah Whitney (American geologist). The group named the taller Mount Harvard (14,420 ft) after their own university and the shorter Mount Yale after Whitney's alma mater. Due to the similarity in heights of Mount Princeton and Mount Yale (Princeton is one foot (0.30 m) higher), it was once a tradition for the alumni of each school to carry rocks to the top of their respective mountain in order to add to the stone pyramid built at the summit. The graduates used these rock towers to ensure their mountain was the tallest.
